Eunice Dwumfour, a New Jersey councilwoman, was shot and killed in her car outside of her home

On Wednesday night, the body of a borough councilwoman from northern New Jersey was found shot to death in her car. Police are looking for answers. The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office said in a news release that Eunice Dwumfour, who lived in Sayreville, died of her wounds after unknown people shot her several times.

The prosecutor said that around 7:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, police in Sayreville were sent to a home in the township after getting a call that shots had been fired. When the police arrived, they found Dwumfour inside her car. According to the prosecutor's office, she had been shot several times and was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been alive for 30 years.

A murder case is being looked into, and the police are trying to find a suspect. The county prosecutor has asked anyone with information about Dwumfour's death or surveillance footage of the area where he was shot to contact either the Sayreville Police Department or the prosecutor's office.

Thursday, public comments were made by people in power in New Jersey about Dwumfour's death. In a statement, Governor Phil Murphy thanked the councilwoman for her work and spoke out against the violence that led to her death.

"I'm shocked to hear that Sayreville Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour was shot and killed last night," Murphy said. "She had just started a career in public service, but by all accounts she was already known as a dedicated member of the Borough Council who took her responsibilities very seriously."

In the statement, Murphy sent his condolences to Dwumfour's "family and friends, her colleagues on the governing body, and the whole Sayreville community."

"Sayreville is a proud, close-knit, and safe community, and I know that it will come together, as it always has," the governor said in his statement. "The New Jersey State Police are helping with the ongoing investigation, and I urge anyone with information to contact the Sayreville Police or the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office."

Mahesh Chitnis, who used to work with him, wrote on Facebook: "I am shocked, afraid, and sad. Eunice Dwumfour was killed this evening 300 feet from my house. She was a former Human Relations Commissioner, a councilwoman in Sayreville, and a neighbour. She was shot as she was going home. She was a very active woman, "CBS in New York said.

In a statement she sent to NJ.com on Thursday, Sayreville Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick also praised Dwumfour as a colleague and friend.

Kilpatrick said in a statement that Eunice was a dedicated member of the borough council who really cared about helping the people in the area. "The fact that she was taken away from us by this horrible crime makes this event even worse."

According to NJ.com, the mayor said, "On a personal note, I can't say enough about how sad I am about the loss of a friend."
